About Us
Ryu Renshi-Dan Karate is a family run business that has been operating in Dobbs Ferry, NY since 1977. Grandmaster, Kyoshi-san Jose Guzman (8th degree Black Belt), is the founder of the system and has served as Chief Instructor at the Hombu Dojo for over thirty years. Kyoshi Guzman is well-known and respected through out the Martial Arts World for all the years of service and dedication he has provided to the arts. While Kyoshi Guzman has an extensive training history of 40+ years, he is also very well known in the Community for his knowledge on the history of all martial arts. Kyoshi Guzman and RRD are also very well known for running an International Martial Arts Tournament in Dobbs Ferry, NY for over 20 years. This tournament was attended by thousands every year in which some of the top competitors in the nation came to compete.
 
In May of 2009, Kyoshi Guzman passed on the reign of Chief Instructor to his son, Sensei Chris Tortu. Sensei Chris has 15+ years of experience in the martial arts. Sensei Chris currently overseas all the teaching and daily operations at the Hombu Dojo. Sensei is continuously expanding his knowldge and growth of all martial arts to better enhance the dojo and all the students that he interacts with. Sensei strives to provide a strong sense of confidence, determination and motivation while maintaining focus and discipline in all of his classes; very beneficial qualities for both inside and outside of the dojo! Sensei is a firm believer in maintaing the old traditional styles and values of teaching karate and makes sure to incorporate and follow those ways inside and outside of the dojo, while expecting the same from all of his students.
