Ryu Renshi-Dan, translation meaning "The Way of the Honorable Man", was founded and created in 1977 by Grandmaster Jose Guzman. Kyoshi Guzman began his training as a young teenager in Up-state New York under the instruction of Sensei Rei Naiyomiya. Unfortunately, after the sudden passing of Naiyomiya Sensei, Guzman decided to take all of his knowledge that he had acquired and start to work on his dream of developing his own martial arts system.

    Kyoshi Guzman established the Ryu Renshi-Dan Karate system based on his experience in Shotokan, Goju and Isshinryu Karate as well as Goshindo Ju-Jitsu under the Instruction of Professor Harold Glackin. Kyoshi continues to train, learn and add to the RR-D style under the mentorships and guidance of the following amazing and talented martial artists: Hanshi Dan Sawyer (Mahato Shorin Ryu, 10th degree black belt), Hanshi Tony Troche (Zen Budokai International, 10th degree black belt, and Hanshi George Alexander (International Shorin Ryu Karate and Kobudo Federation, 10th degree black belt).

    Through out the 30+ years in Dobbs Ferry, Grandmaster Guzman has taught thousands of students and produced over 100 black belts, many of whom were regional, state and national competitors and champions. Ryu Renshi-Dan, under the guidance of Kyoshi Guzman, has now grown and flourished into three dojos all whom wear the RR-D patch proudly on their sleeves. In addition to running his own dojo, Kyoshi Guzman has also established ties and taught the martial arts for many local colleges/universities, set-up after school children programs in Westchester County, various summer camps, JCC programs and recreation department classes in the river towns.

    Ryu Renshi-Dan has grown and established into a large group of family, friends and loyal students and supporters. Our strong reputation of traditional Japanese martial arts instruction is continued to be passed on from day to day to all of our students.
